Zcash Profile

Zcash is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency launched in October 2016 by the Electric Coin Company, founded by Zooko Wilcox-O’Hearn. Built on Bitcoin’s open-source code, it enhances user privacy through advanced cryptography, allowing both transparent and shielded transactions on the same blockchain.

Its core innovation, zk-SNARKs, enables transaction verification without revealing the sender, receiver, or amount. Using Proof-of-Work with the Equihash algorithm, Zcash has evolved through upgrades like Sapling, Blossom, and NU5, improving speed, security, and usability — keeping it at the forefront of privacy-focused digital payments.

Zcash’s story traces back to the academic projects Zerocoin (2013) and Zerocash (2014), which laid the foundation for the Electric Coin Company and the eventual launch of the Zcash mainnet on October 28, 2016 - known as the Sprout era. The early years saw major milestones like Overwinter (2018), which prepared the protocol for future upgrades, and Sapling (2018), which introduced faster, more efficient shielded transactions with a new generation of private addresses.

Progress continued with Blossom (2019), reducing block times; Heartwood (2020), adding shielded coinbase support; and Canopy (2020), marking the first halving and establishing a new development fund. The NU5 (2022) upgrade brought the Halo 2 proving system and Unified Addresses, while NU6 (2024) introduced the second halving and refined the funding model to support long-term protocol growth. Q4 2025

• Ephemeral transparent addresses: Zcash will introduce automatically generated one-time transparent addresses for each incoming transaction, significantly enhancing privacy and unlinkability.
• Cross-chain interoperability: Integration of NEAR Intents will streamline cross-chain operations, enabling smoother collaboration with external blockchain ecosystems.
• Hardware wallet improvements: Enhanced functionality for Keystone devices — including resync/disconnect options and P2SH multisig support — will further secure management of the Zcash Development Fund.
• Ongoing development priorities: Continuous efforts will focus on reducing technical debt, improving privacy UX, and advancing the transparency and governance of the Development Fund.

2026 Focus

• User experience (UX): A major update to the Zashi wallet will deliver a smoother, more intuitive experience for shielded transactions and privacy controls.
• Interoperability: Expansion of bridges and cross-chain compatibility will allow Zcash to interact seamlessly with multiple blockchain networks.
• Governance and transparency: Further decentralization of Development Fund management and increased community involvement will strengthen governance.
• Scalability: Continued research into Halo 2-based recursive proofs will lay the groundwork for Layer-2 solutions and lightweight mobile applications.

ZEC is the native cryptocurrency of the Zcash network, featuring a fixed maximum supply of 21 million coins, with approximately 16.4 million ZEC currently in circulation.

Each new block produces a reward of 1.5625 ZEC, distributed as follows:

• 80% to miners, who secure the network through Proof-of-Work;
• 8% to Zcash Community Grants, supporting ecosystem development;
• 12% to the on-chain Lockbox treasury, which funds ongoing project operations and governance.

ZEC operates on a Proof-of-Work blockchain using the Equihash algorithm with an average block time of around 75 seconds. It supports both transparent t-addresses and shielded z-addresses secured by zk-SNARKs, allowing users to choose between publicly visible and fully private transactions while using the same native asset.

Miners collect transactions into blocks and compete to solve Equihash puzzles, with network difficulty adjusting automatically to maintain an average 75-second block time. While most of today’s hashrate comes from Equihash ASIC miners organized in pools, the algorithm’s memory-hard nature still influences ZEC mining economics. Since the Heartwood upgrade, miners can send their block rewards directly to shielded addresses, allowing new ZEC to enter circulation privately while continuing to secure the blockchain.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has repeatedly pointed to Zcash as one of the strongest real-world applications of zk-SNARKs, saying that for highly privacy-sensitive activity he would probably use Zcash first.
